Association of British Turkish Academics (ABTA) strongly deplores the recent military coup attempt in Turkey. This despicable attack to Turkish democracy was stopped by the courageous response of Turkish people.
Having defeated this malicious attempt, Turkey needs, more than ever, to follow the norms and rules of an open democratic society with due process, rule of law, human rights, freedom of speech and expression, and principles of academic freedom. As such, we are deeply concerned with the developments in aftermath of the coup attempt in Turkey including an order of resignation of all university deans, a travel ban on academics and suspension of hundreds of academic staff.
It's our hope that Turkey fully complies with democratic norms and rules, and respect human rights, individual and academic freedoms in these turbulent times.
